Undergraduate Programs

Undergraduate students may earn either a Certificate in Gerontology or a minor in Gerontology. Courses that meet the gerontology requirement are taught by faculty from the UNO Department of Gerontology, as well as related faculty in other University of Nebraska–Lincoln and University of Nebraska at Omaha departments.

Certificate in Gerontology

The Certificate in Gerology consists of 15 hours of specified coursework plus real-world experience through a one-semester practicum with one of dozens of organizations associated with aging in Omaha, Lncoln, and surrounding areas. This option is ideal for students wanting to pursue a career in healthcare or a related field.

The core courses are GERO 200 Introduction to Gerontology, GERO 446 Psychology of Adult Development and Aging, and GERO 467 Programs and Services for the Elderly. The remaining courses will be agreed upon between the student and advisor in an indivudally designed program of study. 

The Certificate in Gerontology may be used as a minor or concentration within several degree programs offered through UN-L deparments.

Minor in Gerontology

The minor is comprised of 18 hours of coursework. Nine credit hours of core courses are required with the remaining credit hours agreed upon between the student and advisor in an indivdually designed program of study. The core courses are GERO 200 Introduction to Gerontology, GERO 446/PSYC 446 Psychology of Adulty Development and Aging, and GERO 467 Programs and Services for the Elderly.

Undergraduate Major in Gerontology

An undergraduate major in gerontology is not offered on the UN-L campus. However, undergraduate students who complete the Minor in Gerontology or Certificate in Gerontology have the opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Science in Gerontology (BSGE) online through the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Students wanting to explore this option should contact the Department of Gerontology at 402-554-2272.
